Vienna in February ("Februar")

Vienna is a diverse and colourful place full of life; there are different things to see, places to go and stuff to do in different times of the year. In this set of articles, I will highlight the best seasonal events of each month. February is the second month of the feature - and well-known in Austria for its vibrant ball season. There are probably more balls in Vienna than in all other cities of Austria combined - and plenty of other things to do.

Weather in Vienna in February

Vienna in February is freezing cold: The average maximum temperature is 4 degrees Celsius, the minimum averages at minus 1. This might be better than January, but still requires you to bring very warm and windproof clothing if you plan to spend time outside. Visitors of Vienna can expect 3 hours of sunshine on the average February day; on seven days they will experience rain or snowfall over the course of the month.

Things to See & Do in Vienna: February

February delights of Vienna are mostly indoors attractions - for obvious reasons. Apart from the usual suspects of opera, museums, theatres and concerts, the ball season meets its climax on Mardi Gras (Faschingsdienstag). Over the course of the preceding week, all sorts of celebrations take place: Redoutes, balls, parties. The most traditional ball venues are in the Rathaus City Hall and in the Hofburg, but many balls take place in smaller Palais throughout Vienna.

The most legendary of all balls is held in a very unusual venue, in the National Opera: I have covered the Vienna Opera Ball in a separate article in detail, so I won′t describe it again. Try the Faschingskrapfen, traditional doughnuts with apricot-jam and rum filling that are traditionally made during the Fasching season.

Things to Do & See in Vienna′s Surroundings: February

February is the month of Fasching. This is a big deal for children who dress up and go to parties. Adults - even on the countryside - go to balls and fancy dress gatherings. I am not terribly fond of Fasching myself, so I usually refrain from joining the merry crowds. For tourists, I don′t think there is much one could recommend in the surroundings of Vienna for February.
