A List of the Mayors of Vienna

With approximately one fourth of the total population of Austria living in Vienna, the mayor of the capital is among the most important politicians of Austria. Especially with the rise of the Social Democrats in Vienna during the years following WWI, the town′s mayors could and still can rely on a solid majority and a high degree of freedom when it comes to decision making. In 1921, Vienna became a separate province. Therefore, the mayors are governors at the same time.

The role of the Viennese mayors under Habsburg rule varied over the course of the centuries. Naturally, the Viennese love to tell anecdotes of those that were particularly independent and self-confident. One story tells of Emperor Friedrich III, who was about to be forced to sign a treaty that would assign many privileges and a lot of freedom.

Wealthy burghers of Vienna had gathered around him in the old part of the Hofburg Palace with daggers in their hands, when his personal guards discovered the assault and arrested them. A bit of a tension between crown and town remained alive until Vienna finally outlived the Habsburg dynasty in 1919.
