Bishops & Cardinals of Vienna

The Archbishop (Erzbischof) of Vienna is the metropolite of the Catholic province of Vienna, which includes the dioceses of Vienna, St. Pölten, Eisenstadt and Linz. Between 1469 and 1513, Vienna was spiritually managed by "administrators", bishops from other cities - usually under the influence of the Bishop of Passau (today′s Bavaria). At this time, the diocese was considered poor and insignificant.

Vienna got it′s own, locally residing bishop only after the Habsburg′s had risen to Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and could afford to develop a capital as a centre of power. Between 1861 and 1918 (the period when the overshadowing figures of the Archbishop of Salzburg and the bishop of Passau were finally "beaten"), the bishops of Vienna rose to the rank of "Prince Archbishop" (Fürsterzbischof) and had a permanent seat in the parliament.
